Joyce Sutphen

Joyce Sutphen a grandi sur une ferme près de St. Joseph dans Stearns County, au Minnesota. Après 12 ans passées dans les écoles catholiques, elle étudia la littérature à l'Université du Minnesota à la fin des années 1960. À la fin des années 1990, elle termina son doctorat en littérature anglaise, remporta le Barnard New Women Poets Prize, et publia son premier recueil de poèmes Straight Out of View (Beacon Press, 1995). Ses poèmes ont parus dans Poetry, American Poetry Review, Atlanta Review, Minnesota Monthly, North Dakota Review, ainsi que dans d'autres revues et magazines.

Sutphen est la récipiendaire de plusieurs prix : Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship for poetry (1998), deux prix de la Jerome Foundation, le Eunice Tietjens Memorial Prize, ainsi qu'une bourse de la Minnesota State Arts Board Career Opportunity Grant.

Actuellement, elle vit à Chaska et enseigne la littérature et l'écriture au Collège Gustavus Adolphus à St. Peter, au Minnesota. Elle a trois filles : Sarah, Alicia, et Marna.

Naming the Stars

    This present tragedy will eventually
    turn into myth, and in the mist
    of that later telling the bell tolling
    now will be a symbol, or, at least,
    a sign of something long since lost.

    This will be another one of those
    loose changes, the rearrangement of
    hearts, just parts of old lives
    patched together, gathered into
    a dim constellation, small consolation.

    Look, we will say, you can almost see
    the outline there : her fingertips
    touching his, the faint fusion
    of two bodies breaking into light.
